October 22-26
Monday and Tuesday: we will focus on equation solving with decimals and fractions. Students will work independently to review rounding, solving equations with decimals and also fractions. After reviewing the material below, students will be asked to do the practice work at the bottom of this page.
Let's begin by playing "Would you Rather?" as a class!
Would you Rather solve these equations?
You may need to round your final answers, so here is a Rounding review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ARhxT5WyWc
DECIMALS:
1. Instruction video on solving equations with decimals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7rZdPx8OA0
2. Online Decimal equation solving practice: http://www.classzone.com/etest/viewTestPractice.htm?testId=4230
FRACTIONS:
1. Video on how to clear equations of fractions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGPRhzSKdro
2. Examples of solving equations with fractions: http://www.regentsprep.org/regents/math/algebra/AV5/Fequations.htm
3. and fraction practice problems (review and then practice problems at bottom of page): http://www.softschools.com/math/algebra/topics/clearing_equations_of_fractions/
Combined Decimal and Fraction equation solving video:
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/7th-engage-ny/engage-7th-module-3/7th-module-3-topic-b/v/two-step-equations
To begin homework, you must orally explain one example each of clearing a fraction and clearing decimal to me. I would recommend taking notes from one of the video or online problems to use as an example.
HOMEWORK: Decimal and fraction equations ws.pdf
Wednesday:
Correct homework.
Number talk.
Take a number.
Double it.
Add 9.
Subtract 3.
Divide by 2.
Subtract original number.
What does it always equal?
WHY? In your groups, create a way to prove to us that this works for ANY number!
Thursday-Friday:
Start Rates, Ratios, and Percents
Class opener: what is a rate? what is a ratio? How do you solve a proportion?
